Quote of the Day

" Yet not for a moment did I suppose myself actually dead. Such a supposition, notwithstanding what we read in fiction, is altogether inconsistent with real existence; -- but where and in what state was I? The condemned to death"

- from "The Pit and the Pendulum"

Edgar Allan Poe

It's been a while since I posted a Poe quote, so here you go.

"And then there stole into my fancy, like a rich musical note, the thought of what sweet rest there must be in the grave."

modern society?

I was surfing the web for a quote or poem and came across this little gem. When I was done reading it I pondered how closely it relates to current society's thinking. A world full of people, who think they are entitled to everything for nothing.

Momma Welfare Roll by Maya Angelou
Her arms semaphore fat triangles,
Pudgy HANDS bunched on layered hips
Where bones idle under years of fatback
And lima beans.

Her jowls shiver in accusation
Of crimes cliched by Repetition.
Her children, strangers
To childhood's TOYS, play
Best the games of darkened doorways,
Rooftop tag, and know the slick feel of
Other people's property.

Too fat to whore,
Too mad to work,
Searches her dreams for the
Lucky sign and walks bare-handed
Into a den of bureaucrats for her portion.

'They don't give me welfare.
I take it.'

Alone

Edgar Allan Poe

As others were -- I have not seen
As others saw -- I could not bring
My passions from a common spring --

Edgar Allan Poe quote

Be silent in that solitude
Which is not loneliness -- for then
The spirits of the dead who stood
In life before thee are again
In death around thee

Edgar Allan Poe quote

The Raven:

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the stillness gave no token,

Edgar Allan Poe quote

"By the dim light of an accidental lamp, tall, antique, worm-eaten, wooden tenements were seen tottering to their fall, in directions so many and capricious, that scarce the semblance of a passage was discernible between them."

- from "The Man of the Crowd"
